Pe pagina oficială de Facebook, ambasada României în SUA a postat un mesaj dedicat lui David Popovici, care tocmai a fost desemnat „Sportivul Anului 2022”.
„Felicitări, David Popovici!!! Superstarul înotător român David Popovici tocmai a câștigat premiul Sportivul Anului 2022 în înot la Campionatele Mondiale de Natație de la Fukuoka, Japonia.
David Popovici a încântat întreaga lume a înotului în 2022 când, la 17 ani, a devenit primul înotător masculin în 49 de ani care a câștigat atât 100m, cât și 200m liber la aceeași ediție a Campionatelor Mondiale.
Apoi a câștigat titlurile de 100 m și 200 m liber la Campionatele Europene din 2022, doborând un record mondial de 13 ani la 100 m liber.

Romanian superstar swimmer David Popovici just won the Swimming Athlete of the Year 2022 award at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
David Popovici enchanted the entire swimming world in 2022 when, aged 17, he became the first male swimmer in 49 years to win the both 100m and 200m freestyle at the same edition of the World Championships. He then went on to win the 100m and 200m freestyle titles at the 2022 European Championships, breaking a 
13-year-old 100m freestyle world record.
